Dyslexia is a common reading problem despite a person’s intelligence and motivation. The basis for dyslexia can be genetic inheritance or neurodevelopmental gaps. There are several causes of dyslexia and the most common are: visual, auditory or integration of both systems
Our understanding of the mechanisms of reading has grown significantly in the past ten years. Only recently has it become possible to examine the physical behavior of the brain during the act of reading. The fascinating field of cognitive neuroscience provides a common ground for interesting discoveries from various disciplines such as medicine, education, computer science and the field of brain imaging. A new frontier is emerging – the reading brain. Although the acquisition of reading involves many complex connections in the brain, not even two readers will share the use of the same “hardware”. Each brain has neurological connections that are just as characteristic of it as fingerprints. Neurological diversity explains the variability of the properties of different brains in the acquisition of reading. Some brains acquire reading very quickly, and within a short time reach the average reading level for their age in two years. Other brains find the acquisition of reading extremely difficult, no matter how hard they try.
Scientists estimate that language is about 2 million years old. Our earliest language did not include speech components, because communication was done through facial expressions and body movements. Within a process of 2 million years, the brain evolved to the ability to speak. It is estimated that human speech has existed for 150,000-250,000 years and is an innate function of our brain, like walking or breathing. Unlike speech, writing and reading are new inventions. Writing has only been around for about 4,000 years. Just like television or radio, writing was developed as another means of communication. The use of reading and writing in schools for the entire population is even newer. The development of writing as a means of communication is so new that the brain has not had enough time to develop natural systems for it, and therefore reading and writing are skills that must be taught. The invention of writing gave rise to the cognitive act of reading. Since reading is an invention of a new action, there is no innate system in the brain for reading. Therefore, the act of reading must be based on existing brain systems, involving the visual and auditory systems. Reading is a completely unnatural and artificial process for the brain and takes many years to acquire and properly establish this skill. It is not surprising that many children find the acquisition of reading difficult. Nevertheless, reading is important, because it provides a very effective way to acquire new information quickly.
The Raviv Method
is an advanced multi-sensory program developed to enable people with learning disabilities to effectively acquire reading skills. The program is based on training the “auxiliary wheels” of motor, visual and auditory skills in order to build the electrical circuits required for reading. When the electrical circuits are established in the brain, the brain no longer needs these “auxiliary wheels” because the brain is fully prepared for independent reading without assistance.
