Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability in mathematics . Like dyslexia , dyscalculia can be caused by a deficit in visual perception. Which specifically refers to the inability to perform operations in mathematics or arithmetic . It is one of the lesser-known learning disabilities, like dyslexia. In fact, it is considered a variation of dyslexia. People with dyscalculia often have an IQ at a normal level, but they have problems with mathematics. Many people with dyscalculia have an IQ higher than normal. Dyscalculia is not rare: the prevalence of dyscalculia in the general population is between 5-7 percent of the population. 15 percent of those who suffer from dyslexia also suffer from dyscalculia. However, it is not always clear whether this is a problem in mathematics or a symptom of difficulties in reading and writing (dyslexia). It is clear that language difficulties will affect a student’s studies and there is no doubt that a child who has difficulty understanding the teacher’s explanations will also have difficulty in the area of numbers and mathematics.

Logical-mathematical intelligence is the ability to use numbers effectively or to think logically and systematically. “Mathematical thinking” is a concept that developed in the field of educational work in response to the need for the education system to teach children the subject of mathematics in schools. It is not a concept from the field of child development, psychology or brain studies. The important insight is that the human need for survival is the need to solve problems and that mathematics is a tool to achieve this goal. Mathematical thinking is survival thinking of profit and loss and most people will develop its basic skills as an integral part of their development. This process can continue until the age of 10-12. School curricula reflect this knowledge by repeating the basic topics over and over again from first to seventh grade.

A math disability is diagnosed when a subject’s mathematical level is low relative to their age, education, and IQ. Two cases must be distinguished:

Acquired dyscalculia – when the low level can be attributed to brain damage suffered by the subject
Developmental dyscalculia – when the subject suffers from a disability but it is known that the subject does not suffer from brain damage

The Raviv Method creates the neurological foundation for logical mathematical perception. Without this foundation, trying to teach a child with dyscalculia to learn math would be like walking through a wall without opening a door.
